The most common cause of tripping power

If your electricity trips and you also have no hot water, the geyser is the first place we look. A geyser element sits directly in water, and when its outer sheath fails, current leaks to earth. The earth leakage unit detects that and cuts the power — correctly. That's why a failed element so often shows up as a whole-house trip rather than simply cold water.

How to tell what's wrong

No hot water, no tripping: usually a failed element or thermostat, or a tripped safety cut-out. The geyser simply isn't heating.

No hot water and the power trips: almost always a failed element leaking current to earth. This is the classic pattern.

Water too hot or wildly inconsistent: generally a failing thermostat that's no longer regulating temperature accurately.

Hot water runs out much faster than it used to: often a partially failed element in a dual-element geyser, or heavy scale build-up reducing efficiency.

What we do on site

We test the element and thermostat directly rather than replacing parts speculatively. Testing takes a few minutes and tells us exactly which component has failed, so you're not paying for a new element when the thermostat was the actual problem. We check the isolator, the wiring and the connections at the same time, since burnt terminals at the isolator are common and easily missed.

Where the element has failed, we replace it with a correctly rated unit, drain and refill as required, and test the installation under load before leaving. We also confirm the earth leakage protection operates correctly afterwards.

A note on scope: we handle the electrical side of geyser work — elements, thermostats, isolators, wiring and safety devices. Plumbing failures such as a burst cylinder, corroded pipework or a faulty pressure control valve need a qualified plumber. We'll tell you honestly which one you're dealing with rather than sending an unnecessary invoice.
